Challa Bread 🍞

by Tatianna Yougottalove

I always enjoy this process of shaping and braiding Challot bread.

Challot is a special bread in Jewish cuisine, usually braided and typically eaten on ceremonial occasions such as Sabbath and major Jewish holidays.

I always thought It’s hard and complicated to make Challah.
Richard and I loved this bread, but when becoming 100% vegan I knew I wouldn’t find it anywhere without eggs.
But then I found out that it is possible to make it without eggs.
And not only did it turn out to be sooo tasty, but it also came out
fluffy and super soft on the inside.

Because we are gluten-free we don’t eat Challot often.
I decided to start making bread and bake with gluten because I want to show that you can have any bread and any food you want without any animal products and enjoy food that doesn’t contain any animal suffering in it.

PLEASE BE WARNED: It’s very addictive.

Here is a full video for how to make 2 loaf Challot bread!!!

The ingredients you’ll need:

Warm water
Instant yeast
Cane sugar
Oil
All-purpose flour
Salt
Oil mixed with sesame/ chia /poppy seeds

If you used to add eggs in your bread I promise you, there is no need, not anymore.
This 🍞 bread came out so fluffy and soft.

The first step; add the next ingredients in a bowl :
2¼ cups of warm water
2¼ tbsp instant yeast
¾ cups of cane sugar
Now let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes to activate

When ready add on top
¾ cup of oil
6½ cups of all-purpose flour
And the last Ingredient on top of the flour add
1 tbsp salt

Now it’s ready to be mixed well all together.
In this part you don’t have to use your hands if you don’t want to, you can mix it with a wooden spoon until all the ingredients are mixed together well.

When ready you can start kneading with your hands and add flour as you go when needed.
Knead the dough for around 10 minutes or until it forms.
When ready cover with plastic wrap and a towel.
And let it rise for about 30 to 60 minutes.

Before you start with the next steps preheat the oven to 350c.

When ready, flour your work surface and cut the dough in half.

Each dough knead is to take out the air and form.

Brush oil mixed with sesame/ chia/ poppy seeds on top of the bread,.
Or, agave nectar mixed with one of the seeds.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until browned.

If you have the patience for it, let it cool down and then cut. My boys like it warm and they also don’t have patience, LoL 😋

Cut and serve with anything you want.
Vegan cream cheese
Hummus with vegetables
Vegan cheese
Vegan mayo

For me this is the best part of Challa bread, to shape and to braid, Yay 🙌.

My boys love to make all type of shapes.
They made hearts, stars, even shaping the dough like some of their favourite toys.
It’s an amazing activity to do with your kids.

Most of the braided bread is very easy to shape.
